Touching Civil War Reunion
James Melvin lost three brothers in the Civil War and spent the next 48 years saving the money to construct a memorial to them. In 1909 the memorial was dedicated by the remaining members of the Massachusetts regiment to which all four Melvin brothers served in. There are many speeches were made about the brothers and about the war. It is pretty clear that not all of the veterans present were in favor of reconciling with their former foes, something that was increasingly popular as the century closed. There are some very thoughtful and interesting ideas expressed and this little book is well worth reading. It is truly packed with history and will be of particular interest to those studying the Civil War. One of the Melvin brothers was a prisoner at Andersonville and his diary is reproduced at the end of the book. It is hard to read but very worthwhile.
